the world, recovering from drug, alcohol, and internet
and game problems, are now rebuilding their lives through
the help of the Alcoholic Anonymous Twelve Step Program.
Nearly seventy ago, when AA began, its founders probably
would have blinked in amazement at the thought. For
years, people assumed that AA members were middle-aged
men with half-lifetimes of drinking behind them.)

(Just when we thought we were gaining some control over
our own destinies, our lives got out of hand. In fact,
they became unmanageable. To sum up the situation, our
days were full of unmade beds, unpaid bills, undone
school assignments, unpleasant confrontations, and unhappy
relationships. And we were lonely a lot of the time,
even in the middle of a crowd.)

(Part of feeling better was not
being lonely. We wanted to belong to a group, and maybe
that group did drugs or online computer games. We thought
doing internet or using drugs would make us less lonely,
especially since "everybody" seemed to be

with drugs or internet games, we thought we were charmed,
somehow immune to compulsive problems. We was too young,
too ordinary, too together to get hooked.)

( Mountains of problems began to pile up at home and
at school. Our lives were spinning into chaos, and we
hardly knew it!)

( Later, when we learned more about the disease of alcoholism/chemical/internet
dependency, we could look back and see that our thoughts
and behaviors were pretty typical. Most of us, in varying
degrees, suffered from our dependency.)

(We denied we had a problem with alcohol, drugs, or
computer games. ¡°We weren't in any trouble - not us!¡±)

(We believed we could handle any situation that came
along. But the simple truth was that we weren't handling
it very well. We minimized the messes we got ourselves
into, and we were off base in our assessments of ourselves.
We blamed everything but alcohol, drugs, or computer
games for our screw-ups!)
4. ±â¸¸ (Deceit)

(We lied a lot, made up elaborate stories to keep our
drug or other behaviors hidden from our families and
our teachers. And up to the time when we got mixed up
with drugs most of us were proud of being really honest!)

( If the disease had progressed far enough, we honestly
didn't care what happened to us as long as we could
set up our next highs. Those druggy highs became the
most important part of our lives.)

( Later, we learned, too, that the sickness of alcoholism,
chemical dependency, or internet habit is chronic and
progressive. It doesn't get better - it gets worse.
If unchecked, it is fatal. But we were the lucky ones.
Someone, or a group of people, cared enough to intervene
in our drinking, drug-using, or online behaviors. We
accepted the idea that we needed help, and we found
it - in a treatment program, in recovery groups.)
